B3 Barossa Cabernet Merlot 2011

Cabernet Merlot

VINTAGE REPORT

The 2011 Vintage very challenging as the growing season was wetter than average.  Summer saw well above average rainfall and much cooler temperatures slowing the rate of ripening and delaying harvest. Incessant rains caused mildew and botrytis to grow in some regions, but with careful vineyard management and selective hand harvesting the vintage was very successful with lower yields but good quality fruit.  The cool summer and autumn produced very interesting wines showing finesse and elegance, with Shiraz and Mourvedre offering more pepper and spice than usual and Cabernet Sauvignon displaying excellent varietal character.

TASTING NOTE

Deep ruby and crimson hues. This wine exhibits richness of raspberry, new leather, cigar box and cedar. The nose is further accentuated with lifted plums dusted with cinnamon, and underlying mint chocolate.  The palate is lusciously abundant with dark berries layered with vanilla and chocolate and  laced with star anise which provides exceptional length and mouth feel. A medium bodied wine with the palate  showing  links to the ‘Old World’ in profile. Fruit richness, with soft but firm approachable tannins. Good oak balance.

VINEYARDS

The fruit comes from several different vineyards situated on the Barossa Valley floor. The vineyards range from 12 to 25 years old and yield 4t/acre.
